Boom in Used Car Market in the Wake of the Pandemic

The pandemic hit the motoring sector in many different ways. During the first lockdown in 2020, the roads were clear and many people didn’t drive around at all. This led some people to sell their second car or even their main one which meant that there ended up being much more choice in the used car market for motorists to enjoy. As the UK has entered the final throes of lockdown and social distancing in 2021, so the used car market in the country has seen something of a boom. What are the implications of this nationwide phenomenon?

Firstly, it should be said that the choice of owning a second-hand car, as opposed to a brand-new one, is good for the environment. This is because used cars are effectively being recycled when they are purchased by new owners, helping to ensure that they enjoy longer working lives than would otherwise be the case. Even better, some of the most recent models on offer are very fuel-efficient nowadays and you can even find hybrid and all-electric cars among the very wide amount of choice.

Of course, the pandemic led some people to buy a used car for the first time. Maybe their income dropped, so they needed to buy something other than a brand-new car for the first time? Again, some people decided that working from home meant they needed more than one car in the driveway, especially if one or more people in a household had been used to commuting by public transport. The more competitive pricing, the lower level of sales tax, and the degree of choice have all been a part of why there has been such an upsurge in interest in the used car market in the wake of the pandemic. Many buyers now look for large inventories to find the right vehicle for their needs. This shift has made it easier for people to compare different makes and models in one place. Online platforms and large physical yards help shoppers see what is available in the current market. When people search for carsales, they often want a wide range of options and clear pricing. Having access to thousands of cars under one roof simplifies the process for many families. It also helps them feel more confident about the value they get for their money.

Furthermore, some people who may never have considered buying a car from a used vehicle dealership before the pandemic have been pleasantly surprised by the experience. Far from being subject to dodgy wheeler-dealers who have a habit of selling duds, the majority of the UK’s used car dealerships are run to very high consumer standards. These days, warranties and full service histories are the norm in the used car market. As word has spread among car buyers about the joys of turning to a used car dealership rather than purchasing a new one, more and more people have decided that the second-hand car market is for them. The boom in the sector certainly looks set to continue for some time yet!
