I saw something really cool this afternoon and because I have a strong suspicion that it is going to be on the news at 6 o’clock tonight, I thought I’d get in there and report on it a good few minutes before them! Ha!
So, have you ever taken the little ones to a proper museum? You know the type I mean. Not something like the Science Museum for example where the hands on experiments engage them practically but somewhere say, like the British Museum. A quiet environment where hushed whispers are the only break in the calm yet frantic tourist throng. A museum like that where culturally you want them to be able to soak up all the history but one which isn’t the most exciting or inspirational for little minds at first glance…
Sure they want to learn but I’m not sure that sort of environment, looking at artefacts and reading information, is very interesting for them and although they like the stories once told it’s hard to get them enthusiastic about lumps of stone in cold rooms… Or is it?
Today I was introduced to the new app by Gamar which is going to make museums and the history they are telling come to life in a really interactive way for children! I saw it in action in Room 18 of the British Museum where ancient Greece is the subject matter and the app provides a game around the artefacts! It is going to be rolled out to other London museums with different exhibitions and then further afield too!
The premise at The British Museum is to rescue a gift being taken to Athena for her birthday. The gift is whipped up in the wind and in order to find it you must find statues and solve puzzles around it. I had a go and it was AWESOME! I would do this WITH my children as they are so little and they would enjoy it greatly but slightly older ones can rush about on their own in the room solving the story while finding out fascinating and factual details about the people depicted on the friezez and the epic history of ancient Greece! It is aimed at children over 7 but I know my two would have fun playing with help from me!
In my opinion it is an absolute masterpiece and I feel absolutely certain that when it is rolled out to other museums with other games to suit them that it will be a tremendous hit everywhere! It has been years in the making and with great attention to every detail, even down to which way the wind should blow, to make sure that it is as accurate as it can be, Gamar deserve every applause they get for their new creation! The british Museum have been very hands on in the development so the fact they believe in it so much says it all!
The game has great graphics, is really fun and has no sound to be in keeping with the vibe of the museum!
If you are visiting the British Museum with your little ones (or one of the other museums with an app from Gamar) make sure you down load the app which can be found on Google Play and the App Store for FREE and then you are all set for all the games to come in the series after this one and each game will cost £2.49. All you need is a smart phone or a tablet and you’re away! Check out www.gamar.com for more details.
What an excellent learning tool! I’m sure it won’t be long before schools cotton on to it too, you heard it here first people!
I have not been paid for this post.
