More Than A Famous Face!
With the rise of social media it has become even more apparent that the most strategic way of advertising has been through celebrity endorsement. It’s always been that way of course, with famous faces chosen to front campaigns for brands on television commercials and magazine ads, but what’s different now is that the celebrities themselves have taken control of what they endorse on their own channels, even making big businesses of their own which they monetise using their own status. Clever huh?!
Click Consult have written about this new era of celebrity branding showcasing talents like Ryan Reynolds, Taylor Swift and David Beckham to visually describe how the famous have made a brand new avenue of income simply by being themselves. It’s more than the “celebrity endorsement” we are used to, this is them taking control (which social media has largely allowed everyone to do) of their own narrative, be it the stories that are leaked to the public about themselves, or creating new businesses with their own faces at the helm.
Ryan Reynolds, for example, owns a share in a UK football club. How lovely to be able to indulge himself, but more than that, just by owning a share of the club he has been able to raise the profile of it, make more money for it and become wealthier himself. It’s a win/win situation for Ryan and every supporter of his club who probably then trust him more with everything else he’s “selling”.
He owns or has stakes in companies that produce mobile coverage, gin and also produce films and alongside his wife he manages to raise the profile of these businesses by promotion, alongside keeping his prominence as a Hollywood actor. If you loved him in Deadpool for example, then you’re more likely to buy his products. Interesting isn’t it!
Florence and I are long term fans of the Spice Girls and when we met Emma Bunton on two occasions through work, it was easy to see why she had used her image to brand baby products successfully. I guess it’s all about choosing the right businesses to go with your profile but there’s no two ways about it, stars have their hands in more than one pot these days, and good for them!
When I follow a brand on Instagram it’s usually because I trust the faces behind it, and if that face belongs to a celebrity we feel we “know” then that’s got to be the reason it’s valuable right?! They work hard behind the scenes, of course they do, but having that leg up with a raised profile is their ticket to success when it comes to promoting their own brands, which, of course, they want to do! It’s one thing being paid to promote something for someone else, quite another higher earner if you’ve your own stake in the business.
So, whether you like it or not, celebrities and their own brands, be they fake tans from ex Love Island contestants, or high end make up owned by pop stars, the business is definitely more likely to thrive and if you’re curious about what else can make someone Deadpool Famous like Ryan Reynolds, then I suggest you take a look at Click Consult’s latest campaign!
