Rustic Decorative Items for Your Home
As many of you are aware I adore the farmhouse rustic look. I am always searching for new ways to give my home a more rustic feel. When I come across enough interesting ideas I like to write an article like this one just for personal inspired if nothing else!
Create beautiful rustic canvas prints
Firms like hello canvas make it really easy for you to create your own artwork for your home. They can take any photo and turn it into a print for your walls.
Taking a photo of a rustic scene and sending that off to be turned into a canvas print is a really easy approach. Or, you could get more creative and take a plant or flower and have it blown up to hang on your wall. A close-up shot of a pile of autumn leaves can also look good.
Use scrap wood to make some simple decorative items
Aged wood has exactly the look you want. If you cannot get your hands on large pieces, do not worry. You can do far more than you think with relatively small panels of scrap wood. For example, you can use a small square and a short length of rope to make a toilet roll holder. Relatively small pieces of aged wood can also be used to make interesting wall hangings.
Larger pieces of aged or distressed wood can be mounted on the wall with brackets that are designed to hold mason jars. These are ideal for use in a bathroom for storing items like your toothbrushes, small soaps, cotton buds and cotton wool balls. If you are going to use wood in a bathroom or toilet just be sure to paint or spray it with some sort of waterproofing product.
Alternatively you can collect driftwood on the beach if you live close to the coast and can visit after a storm. My friend Katy made me this with a small piece she found and I love it!
Make use of baskets
Baskets always look rustic and you can use them in many different ways around the home. Square ones are ideal for storing items that you rarely use under your bed. Provided you choose nice-looking ones they can be pulled far enough forward to be seen and used for decorative effect. If you have a wood-burner or open fire, stowing your logs in a large basket always looks nice and is also practical. Other similar items like rope baskets also look nice.
I use baskets to keep everyone’s bedding in. Each person has their own saving confusion at the airing cupboard and they look really lovely I think!
Rustic arrangements
Bringing the outdoors in is a great way of creating a more rustic feel. Making arrangements out of dried leaves and flowers works particularly well. You can easily learn how to do it from places like YouTube or by joining your local flower-arranging club. Interesting arrangements can also be made out of other items. For example, stones, pinecones, twigs and other attractively shaped items you pick up can be arranged in interesting ways for use as table centerpieces.
