There’s no doubt that a day out in London can cost a pretty penny so I’m a massive one to shout about ways to save those purse strings from breaking open because London does have an amazing array of fabulously fancy free things to take advantage of with the kids as well. Most of the bigger museums have free entry and others a one off ticket price which will last the whole year so that you can re-visit. There are also parks and sights aplenty which can be visited at absolutely no cost and such wonderful sights to see simply by taking a walk BUT… London does also have a string of rather fabulous treats to be indulged in when you can and if like us, you want to spend a couple of days in the capital doing a LOT of everything, then you might like to choose one or two of the big money attractions to muddle in with the free stuff. Obviously it’s not feasible to do everything as it would cost a blooming fortune so you do have to choose wisely and with kids in tow, the choice has to be very wise indeed – there’s nothing like parting with a hundred quid only to hear the dulcet tones of a five year old on repeat with the song ‘I’m bored’! So… What Should you be doing in London town? Well… This half term we visited Shrek’s Adventure who with Kung Fu Panda were celebrating Chinese New Year! We LOVED saying Gong Hey Fat Choy to Po and all the other characters and the adventure with Shrek himself was totally brill!
We’ve done it before but the kids were much younger and actually, I think it’s kind of got even better. Or maybe 5 and 8 are just even better ages to fall in love with being inside a story which saw us accidentally run over Rumple Stiltskin’s favourite witch and have to go on the run while we created a magic spell to free ourselves from his clasps!
Honestly it was fabulous and SO much fun. The children were equally thrilled with the simulated ride at the beginning as they were with each and every room of the adventure as we made our way through the forest visiting Cinderella (super funny), Puss in Boots and a whole host of other fave characters from the film. It’s really immersive and LOTS of fun! Even Raffie in the sling was all eyes open and LOVING looking at everything! The actors are top notch too!
It IS pricey but deals can be done and actually… My friend and I thought it was thoroughly worth it! Merlin Attractions run Shrek’s Adventure so it’s worth noting that they also run lots of other attractions in the city like the London Eye (which is next door), Madame Tussauds and the London Dungeon. You can buy cheaper tickets to see more than one attraction which makes it even more affordable and actually, even more fun! It’s also worth noting that the door price is MUCH more expensive than prior booking on line so you know what to do huh! I’m seriously considering an annual Merlin pass after our adventure with Shrek because the kids LOVED it and we could just pop and do this on every London jaunt followed by the Aquarium and a ride on the Eye not to mention all the amazing parks outside of the city. Jimmy is DESPERATE to go to Lego Land for his birthday and we were going to book an overnight in the hotel and go for two days… The annual passes work out at about the same price as doing that once and you even get a good discount on the hotel… Watch this space! An annual ticket for an adult is £139… If you’re visiting the capital and want to do everything I really think an annual could be the way to go!
Shrek’s Adventure is fun and thrilling and SO worth the visit – we want to go again it really was that good! Aside from all the fast and furious fun, I LOVED the fact that I could also leave my buggy, with all our coats and bags on it at the lost and found station before the tour started. We couldn’t do that the last time we went and were only allowed to leave the buggy. It was a massive faff unpacking the buggy and carrying all our truck around with us and the lady told me this is a new rule and it’s MUCH better – bravo Merlin for making this change, we salute you! We can’t wait to come again!
So Gung Hey Fat Choy to Shrek and Kung Fu Panda and all the other characters at the adventure, we think you’re ace!
We were invited to review Shrek’s Adventure.
