How to make your smile dazzle

In the day and age we live in, nothing but an ultra bright white smile is sufficient to attract your potential suitor or impress new people. We could all do with a few tips on how to get our smiles a bit whiter. With so many ‘home whitening kits’ available, it can be hard to know what it best to do for your teeth.

Brush regularly

This sounds so obvious, but according to an article in the Daily Mail in June 2013, SEVEN MILLION Brits do not brush their teeth properly. Not only can plaque cause tooth decay and gum disease, but it can also lead to unsightly yellow stains when the plaque that hasn’t been removed turns into tartar, which is the yellow deposit you can notice around the gum line. When you do your nightly brush, this coats the teeth with fluoride which protects them. Unlike your morning brush, which will also coat with fluoride but get washed away during the day by eating and drinking, your nightly brush will stay on as a protective coat while you sleep.

Mouthwash

Mouthwash is also a handy little tool you can use to help remove plaque build up, and can be used as a second form of attack against it after brushing. Another great benefit to mouthwash usage is that it will keep your breath fresh, after all, it’s no good having sparkly white teeth but as soon as someone gets close to your, they are put off by your breath. If it contains fluoride, it can also strengthen your enamel and prevent cavities. Try visiting Smiles of West Point so they could do a full work-up of your teeth and see what type of mouthwash works best for you.

Floss

While it’s easy to appreciate how floss can seem a tad excessive, it really will give you a great smile. As regularly as anyone brushes their teeth, unfortunately a plain old toothbrush simply cannot always get into those hard to reach gaps. Brushing will clean the surface of your teeth, but flossing will remove dirt from the gaps in between. Although there is no recommendation for how often you should floss, you should aim for at least once a day if you want a clean pearly white smile. The most important thing is to floss correctly, rather than keep flossing many times quickly and incorrectly.

Watch what you eat

I know it sounds really dull to keep an eye on everything you eat and drink, and no one’s saying you should give up your beloved red wine forever, but if you want your teeth to be shiny and bright, it would be worth taking it into consideration. Tea and coffee are among the biggest culprits of discoloured teeth, red wine, and not only will dark fizzy drinks discolour but the amount of sugar in them will be certain to do more harm than visible to the naked eye. If you do decide to have treats that you know may stain your teeth, why not try to get into the habit of using a straw, of brushing your teeth straight after.
