Baby showers are becoming more and more popular in the UK these days as a way to really spoil the mum to be before she welcomes her new arrival into the world. Whether hosted by the mum to be herself, or by a close friend or relative, they’re a great way to enjoy time with friends before the whirlwind of nappy changing and broken sleep begins. Some great ideas for baby showers are:
Gender Reveal Showers
If you plan to reveal the sex of your baby before their birth, a great way to do that is to host a gender reveal shower. Sometimes even the parents themselves don’t know until the party itself, having asked the doctor who performed their scan to write the sex of their baby down and seal it in an envelope, making the reveal even more special.
You could ask everyone to decide what sex they think the baby will be and wear either pink or blue themselves to the party, or perhaps pick the relevant coloured party accessory on the way into the party and provide coloured necklaces or badges for example. Revealing the sex of the baby could be done by cutting a cake iced with a neutral coloured icing, yet once it’s cut into the sponge could be pink or blue, or even a piñata style cake where pink or blue sweets flow out when you cut a slice.
Florence had a Pinata cake for her last birthday and it was very impressive!
Other great ideas are to open a box of balloons and see which colour helium balloons float out, or perhaps burst a dark coloured balloon and see which coloured confetti comes out when it pops. The same could be done with a piñata – once struck pink or blue wrapped sweets or confetti could burst out. Perhaps the mum to be could wear a pretty dress from George at ASDA in either pink or blue and reveal the sex to all of the guests at once. There really are so many inventive ways to reveal the sex of your baby, you’ll want to try them all.
Bump Painting
A lovely way to spend some time with the mum to be is either joining forces with other guests to paint her bump, or having an artist paint it for her. You only have to go on Pinterest or Google ‘bump painting’ to find some amazing ideas and images that would fit in with any baby shower theme – from funny ones where mum’s tummy is turned into a basketball for some amusing pictures that look like she’s on a basketball court, to pretty ones featuring flowers and even favourite nursery rhyme characters. It’s a lovely bonding experience and one that is becoming increasingly popular of late, thanks largely to the unusual yet beautiful photographs it offers to remember such a special time in the mum to be’s life.
Other great ideas for a baby shower are brunches or afternoon tea style showers, or do as our American cousins do and throw a nappy party or clothes party. Have everyone bring a pack of nappies for the new parents so they won’t have to buy their new baby any for a few months, or hang a washing line for people to peg their gifts of clothes for the new baby on.
I didn’t actually know the sex of my baby to reveal it but I loved my baby shower, this was my invite with a scan picture of Jimmy!
Add themed invites and a cake and you can easily and cheaply create a great theme for a super baby shower for the mum to be to remember forever – or at least until baby brain kicks in!
