5 Screen Free Activities for Children

To get your child away from the temptations of lots of screen time, we recommend incorporating lots of screen free activities to help your child develop their skills in different ways. Here are 5 activities you could try that will get your child away from the TV or smart device.

1. Cooking or baking

Making a meal or cake together can be a good way to strengthen your bond between each other, as well as developing ways to pick up their skills in cooking. Let your child choose a recipe from a book and see what you need to put it all together. See which elements your child likes the most and, if they agree, make it a regular thing you can do together.

2. Heading out for a long walk

This is a good option if you have a dog that needs walking, but it’s also great for families to get together and get away from their phones. Look up some friendly walks that are good for all fitness levels and see where the world takes you. There could be a mountain you might want to climb together as a family for a final challenge.

3. Painting

There are many creative and wellbeing benefits when it comes to painting. Your child can unwind as they push the paintbrush down and place it on the canvas, letting it take the paint across the page. It’s a very therapeutic way of engaging with your child while also getting your child away from the screen.

4. Reading

Reading should feel like a fun and engaging activity with your child. Take your child to the library to pick out lots of different fictional stories and see which ones your child takes a liking to. If your child is studying right now, then the school library is another good place for them to get away from tempting devices. Private sixth forms often have a high quality learning space for students to read and have time to focus.

5. Heading to the museum

Another educational activity without the need for devices is heading out to a museum. With so many museums for your child to choose from they can work on their understanding of complex themes. Depending on the museum you could also discover biodiversity, history of the region and industry developments – all key for your child’s knowledge. There’s usually plenty to learn and appreciate in museums, so take your child around some of the best ones in your area!

Collaboration.
