Today, 28th April 2015, is National Super Hero Day. True story! National Super Hero Day is all about celebrating the super heroes amongst us who give their all to inspire others. What a fun way of celebrating that!
This year even 56 year old (she doesn’t look a day older than she did in her youth lucky gal) Barbie by Mattel is getting in on the action! Barbie wants to inspire girls to #BeSuper and in her latest DVD, ‘Barbie In Princess Power’, she transforms herself into a super hero which will encourage her fans to find ways of being super in smaller ways too.
When I think of super heroes I do usually think of boys and the storylines, which often are based around good Vs evil, just wouldn’t be up my particular girlie girl’s street so we’re not terribly familiar. The new Barbie film changes the dynamic of the genre and although they’re definitely super heroes with the capes, masks and glamour, the film is more about using their powers for forgiveness and friendship to defeat their foes.
Barbie is showing her fans that being lovely and caring and helpful is the way forward and empowers them to find their own super powers from within.
We had a little party to celebrate National Super Hero Day with our new favourite super hero, Barbie and Florence and her pals loved it. A recent survey showed that girls wish there were more super heroes especially FOR girls with nearly 9 out of 10 agreeing with that statement and the concept has certainly gone down well with us!
The DVD which is also available on digital download gives a real dose of ‘girl power’. Barbie plays Kara, a modern day Princess with an every day life, who gets kissed by a magical butterfly and soon after discovers she has magical powers that transform her into Super Sparkle! Super Sparkle flies around the kingdom saving the day in a sassy and fun way and of course there’s a nemesis, a happy ending and an empowering message of there being no greater power than the power of friendship! We thought it was great and that’s without mentioning THE songs! We’ve been YouTubing the music videos ever since.
Florence has a massive super hero quality in her as she is so kind and loving. That’s the best super hero quality of all don’t you think?! Her little brother can be a real pain as only little brothers can but she never gets angry with him when he stomps on her carefully set out toys and she rarely reacts back when he clonks her on the head with one of his trains… He is a real boy! She is lovely. Jimmy’s super hero quality would have to be the way he can go from being a monkey in the first degree to making you smile with love as he looks up all cute faced after a mental moment and says ‘I love you too Mummy’, even when you haven’t said it first he always says ‘too’!
We had a brilliant time celebrating national Super hero Day and did some Barbie colouring in the park with a picnic, watched the DVD (a LOT) and even got to play with some of the toys to accompany the film.
First up with the toys, Barbie as Kara with the Super Sparkle doll. This one reminded me of my 80’s ‘Day To Night Barbie’ which I loved. My old Barbie transformed from 80’s working gal into night time babe out for dinner with her boyfriend Ken. She was more empowered than lots of Barbies who went before her but Super Sparkle, who transforms from Kara to her Super Hero alter ego at the touch of a button and back again with a twist of the waist is bang up to date for empowering girl doing it on her own! LOVE IT!
Next we got to play with the Princess Corrinne doll who is Kara’s cousin that wants to be a super hero too. When she catches the butterfly she turns into barbie’s dark nemesis but everything of course comes good in the end. This doll makes a kissing noise when you press the butterfly and has a very pretty dress.
The Chelsea Superhero doll is Barbie’s youngest sibling on a scooter. When I was little she just had her sister Skipper but more family has joined the gange and this one is super cool with her scooter which she can really stand on and her scooter helmet. I wouldn’t say Jimmy is wild about Barbie dolls but he really took a shine to her!
And lastly we played with the vanity playset which does everything you need in your vanity set but also doubles as the command center for Barbie when she is being Super Sparkle! Pop up the vanity stool and pull out the drawer to reveal a computer and you’re all set. Florence can even borrow my smart phone to clip into it and really bring it to life. The wrist cuffs and necklaces (one set comes with the playset) help unleash the princess power in the dolls – it’s really good fun and Florence was amazed!
Happy Super Hero Day everyone!
