Where to Plan Your First Trip to the Mediterranean
The beauty of travelling to this part of the world is that, if you have the time, you don’t have to pick just one destination. In fact, hopping around the Mediterranean is easier than you might think.
However, if you still need help narrowing down your choices, here are the spots you should consider adding to your list first.
Athens, Greece
Athens is like a living museum, so if you love delving into history, this is a must.
As first-time travellers, you can easily walk to all the central attractions, so there’s no need to figure out the local transport (a big win!). Athens is also one of the easiest places to find a good meal, no matter your preferences.
In terms of what to see and do, don’t miss strolling through the Plaka neighbourhood, where you’ll find traditional food, local musicians and plenty of handmade goods. First-timers should also definitely climb the Acropolis, explore the Parthenon and visit the Acropolis Museum, which is packed with kid-friendly displays.
Kotor, Montenegro
Tucked inside a fjord-like bay, you’ll find Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s quiet, historic and safe, and you won’t have to deal with as many touristy crowds as you would at other destinations—it’s a true gem of the Mediterranean.
Take some time out in Old Town, filled with towers, tiny cafes and plenty of cute street cats. Climbing the old fortress walls is also fun and provides a great bird’s-eye view of the city. And if you feel like getting out on the water, take a short boat ride to Our Lady of the Rocks, a man-made island with a unique legend.
Dubrovnik, Croatia
This beautiful, historic walled city is easy to navigate and a low-stress destination for families. Plus, the locals are super friendly, so someone will always be able to help you out with directions.
Walking the city walls will give you many fun views and photo opportunities, with Fort Lovrijenac being a must—the sea views are unforgettable! Also, don’t miss the Dubrovnik Natural History Museum or the chance to ride the cable car.
Valletta, Malta
Valletta might be one of Europe’s smallest capitals, but it’s packed with history and charm. The fact that it’s an English-speaking city and is easy to get around are some added bonuses for first-timers.
It’s highly recommended that you learn about the Knights of Malta at the Grandmaster’s Palace and watch the Saluting Battery’s daily cannon fire. And for a touch of fun and local flavour, you can ride a colourful dgħajsa boat across the harbour.
Barcelona, Spain
You can’t go wrong with a trip to Spain. Barcelona, in particular, is vibrant and welcoming, with a great public transport system. Plus, you won’t struggle to find an English-speaking local, which is always helpful in a foreign country.
There’s a lot to see and do here, with the unique architecture being high up on the list. Be sure to visit Park Güell and the Sagrada Família to explore Gaudí’s creations.
