Cinderella Rocks 2024 – At The Garage Norwich!
Cinderella Rocks is back at The Garage in Norwich for the 2024 panto season and for my money I’d choose it over the big theatres any time. Supporting small theatre is a beautiful thing, it helps support your community, but more than that, it’s just really, really good!
A cast of three fiesta sisters, and this is the story of Cinders, now “Ella” as you’ve never seen her before (unless you saw the production when it first came to The Garage’s stage during the pandemic, when it couldn’t be QUITE what it was meant to be, but was still pretty blooming great)! This time around the show is full of hands on touches that make it very inviting for the little ones. Aimed at children under 8, it is the perfect space to make children feel comfortable at the theatre.
Cushions on the floor, or seats as you wish. Chalks and boxes with blackboards to draw on while you wait, or during the show. You can get up and dance (in fact it’s positively encouraged) and if you wander onto the stage, that’s ok too! Welcoming, enveloping and making little ones know that theatre is for everyone, including them!
And the story has lots of panto-esque elements, with mice and “it’s behind you” and some “Oh no it isn’t-ing” as it tells the tale of how Ella and her sisters, not ugly, at least not on the outside to begin with, or anywhere by the end, are ruling the stage of the music industry. Ella/Taylor, you decide. The cast are incredibly talented, making their live music of guitar, drums and keys, not only gift children perhaps their first theatre experience, but maybe also, their first gig!
It lasts an hour and five minutes with no interval but being a safe space you, of course, can come and go as you please.
We thought it was brilliant – so if you’re deciding between a big theatre and a smaller independent, let me tell you that the experience with Cinderella Rocks will be none the poorer for opting to shop local!
