It’s time to say Eho Oh again and time indeed for Teletubbies as they hit our screens in their big 2015 come back!
Teletubbies was first broadcast back in 1997. Amazingly, considering I was 17 at the time, I remember it well. I guess it was one of those shows that the students watched as well or perhaps it was just me? I don’t think so though, my friend Angela was definitely a fan too and she bought me a tiny toy Po for my 18th birthday – we were normal I promise, we just liked Teletubbies!
Florence knew about Teletubbies even though it was cancelled way back in 2001 because she’s played with that little Po toy of mine since she was a baby. My Mum kept it and has it at her house so from quite early on, even though there were no longer any new episodes, we’ve always watched re-runs on CBeebies and even have a DVD.
The show, which was originally created by the legendary Anne Wood at Ragdoll Productions, had a bit of controversy in the nineties if I remember rightly? I think people back in the day were a bit up in arms about the lack of ‘proper vocabulary’ but time and time again Ragdoll Productions have proven that they know exactly what they are doing and and having spoken to Anne at the launch party for her latest children’s favourite, Twirlywoos, earlier on in the year, I’ve no doubt that she’s the expert and she knew what children needed when she created Teletubbies!
After the show was cancelled it did, as I mentinoned, continue to air in its home of CBeebies and although no more were in production the show continued to be a favourite of children who watch the channel. All these years later and it’s still popular so no wonder a resurrection was just around the corner; although it took 14 years, that time is now and a brand new series is about to hit our screens on 9th November 2015!
Yep, Teletubbies is back, with a brand new production company (Ragdoll was taken over by DHX Media) and this time it has a pretty starry line up! Fearne Cotton, Jim Broadbent and Jane Horrocks are amongst the voice talent so it’s certainly a bigger budget, shinier version. We went the all star premiere yesterday and got to see for ourselves what the new look Teletubbies, which this time is shot in high definition, is all about.
We joined the likes of Fearne who was there with her tiny new baby and toddler son, Esther Ranzen, Jennifer Saunders, Dan Snow, JB Gill, Imogen Thomas, Jasmine Harman, Vanessa Feltz and Vas from Towie to name but a few and got to see the show before anyone else and on the big screen too!
The new format has included most of the original ideas which make the show a classic and added a few new ones to add a touch of modern day sparkle too – the audience of little people belonging to celebs, bloggers and journos were all absolutely rapt including Florence and Jimmy and the Southbank BFI lit up with Teletubbies madness! The show follows the tubbies as they go about their day jumping down their rabbit hole, eating and spilling tubby custard and cleaning it up with the Noo-noo (rather unfortunate name when I think about the fact my children and all their friends use the word noo-noo for something entirely different) and we of course still get to see a VT of real life action with real life children through the tubbies tummies. Of course, as per the original, once we have seen it once the tubbies say ‘again, again’ and we get to see it a second time too.
There was a round of applause at the end and lots of smiles on tiny faces after seeing two of the 60 episides from the new run. Are we looking forward to the new series? You betcha! It will be aired on CBeebies, the home it never left, from November 9th in the morning schedule.
We went to the launch party of the new Teletubbies programme.
