Victorian Family Christmas at Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse!
Long fans of Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse we visit many times throughout the year using our annual pass (which for a family of two adults and as many children as you’d like to take on any given day costs just under £100 – for ALL of the Norfolk Museums of which Gressenhall is included). We go to as many event days as we can (because they are mostly included in the pass even though daily ticket prices are often a little higher on those days) and we tend to spend a lot of time in the summer down on the farm or in the wonderful playground. Of all the Norfolk Museums it really is my favourite. Closely followed by Time and Tide in Great Yarmouth and Norwich Castle but it just has the edge with its interesting museum in the old workhouse, hands on exhibitions, rooms depicting moments in time frozen for all to sit and ponder and then ALL the rest of it well… Where to begin?! The extensive grounds and orchards, the play area and working farm. This place really is an absolute gem and though we do the same things when we visit we just never get bored for something is always new and as with any farm, each season brings a different bloom. New piglets make way for baby calves, new crops, different farming techniques on display… It is a gem. A true gem and to visit is a delight. Always!
I’ve never actually been at Christmas time though as the museum traditionally closes to the public in the winter months and it just hasn’t been on my radar though people I know have recently raved about their experiences when they’ve gone along for a day of their special festive opening and experienced what life was like in Victorian Christmas cheer!
So this year we will turn back the clock to see the Victorian Family Christmas at Gressenhall, join in with the pantomime in the Chapel and listen to scary ghost stories in the Workhouse. Crafts are often on offer for the kiddos to turn their hand to at Gressenhall and festive crafts to take home this year will be in the offing along with being able to see traditional Christmas recipes being prepared on the range.
Now the ticket price for this event is not actually included in the annual pass (t might be the only one I think) but if you are a holder then you will get a discount. If you visit between 10am and 2.30pm on either the 19th or the 20th of December then full priced tickets are £10 (£9 for members) with under 4s having no charge and for your money you will be invited to get into the Yuletide spirit with a free glass of mulled wine or spiced apple juice and a mince pie as you meet the Gressenhall Dickensian characters. They do warn to be careful though as you will need to watch your pockets with the Artful Dodger about!
It sounds just up my street and lots of fun so we will be breaking up from school and heading down there on the 20th of December for a little of the Victorian Christmas festivities. Would you like to join us?!
The Victorian Family Christmas event is on at Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse on both the 19th and the 20th of December 2019 between 10am – 2.30pm on each day. Tickets can be booked in advance on the website here.
