How to prepare your child for nursery
How time flies! It may seem like only last week you were cradling your newborn, up at crazy hours to ensure they’re fed and comfy, but now in the blink of an eye, you are preparing them to start attending nursery! After all the research done to find the perfect nursery, you are finally getting ready to send your child off on their journey. However, it can be a difficult process given that this may be your child’s first time ever being away from you, even if it is only for a short period of time. The worries of whether your child will be comfortable with others or will cry at the door until you leave, can flood your mind. It is important to understand that a nursery is designed to nurture and entertain a child to their best ability, meaning that they will eventually settle and love their new routine! If you are on the search, below are some tips on how to prepare your child for nursery, as advised by this nursery in Islington.
Socialise
If nursery is the first time your child will be introduced to new faces, it will be difficult for them to settle given that they have only been surrounded by who and what you have shown them. It is a good idea to present them with new faces a couple months before they attend nursery. This can be through playdates with other children of a similar age, or toddler groups where they get used to the idea of playing, sharing and interacting with others.
Stay calm
No matter how your child reacts when they reach those nursery doors, it is important that you stay calm throughout. Children tune in very well to how their parents feel, so they are highly likely to pick up on your anxiety which can only set off theirs. Your child looks at you for reassurance and guidance, if they notice you crying or getting nervous, they will only end up believing that they are not safe in this new environment, making the entire process that much more difficult. Be positive and keep a smile on your face to reassure your child that everything is okay.
Settling in
Many nurseries offer settling in sessions which allows you to visit and explore the nursery with your little one. Sometimes, this is all a child needs to feel comfortable in a new space. Some familiarity and knowing that you are around if they need you. They are also the perfect way for you to get an idea of what your child will be doing throughout the day, so you are able to converse with them when they come home each day.
