Let your child struggle a little bit

In practicing how to solve different problems your child will have to handle a host of scenarios. It means that your child is going to have to manage their issues on their own from time to time. Let them face the music sometimes to help them overcome a similar problem that comes up in the future.

Jumping in at the first sign your child is struggling reinforces that they will have to wait for you to help them out. Give them the opportunity to figure things out for themselves or at least solve the problem they are having as much as they can.

Give your child the means to try lots of new things

A child should always feel like they can try out whatever interests them. If they are stuck with the same interests each week then it can cause them to slow down and become uninspired by what they’re learning. A hard working child will have the means to solve different problems in all of the activities and pastimes they want to take up. And in letting your child explore as many new things and interests as they can they’re more likely to build on their transferable skills.

Teach them that every step is progress

Progress is never linear. It’s important to give your child the sense that they can achieve whatever they put their mind to. Show them when a setback has happened; how are they feeling? Do they want to try again, or are they afraid? Validate their feelings first, and remind them of how the path to progress is never straightforward. Learning from different people’s mistakes and how they can be handled for next time is why hard working children often flourish.

Give your child the freedom to make decisions

A carefully managed decision maker is going to be able to handle a lot more issues and scenarios where they need to think independently. It’s important to show your child that they can be in charge of a lot of their own decision making, and in fact should be encouraged to do so.

Let your child take on difficult issues and see how they manage. Push them to make a decision, or help them come to one if they are visibly struggling. If you feel it’s beneficial, let them make these tough choices in a safe environment, like at home.
