My First Panto – Rapunzel At The Garage Norwich!

Having visited the My First series of productions hosted at The Garage for a number of years, we always look forward to the next offering. This year’s production of Rapunzel didn’t disappoint!

Written and originally directed by the very talented Daniel Burgess, this version is a reworking of a show we have seen (and loved) before, but still just as gorgeously inviting for little ones!

the theatre space, as always, is geared up for under 7s (although I think a little older, up to age 10, would also enjoy – especially if a less formal performance environment is a better option)! Seating is a couple of rows of the regular studio benches, with floor cushions and a very clear invitation to join in, not worry if you make noise, to move about and make yourself and your little one feel at home and at ease in the space.

The musical performance then envelopes audience members into the singing and dancing with the 3 actors bringing the traditional story of Rapunzel to the stage. Now, what I particularly like about this version is that instead of modernising it and making it feel more in line with stories of today, they do tell the trad fairytale but caveat facts which is an interesting take and I liked it!

Using puppetry, song, movement and costume, the fairytale comes to life and of course, there is a happy ending with much pantomime shenannigans of “oh not it isn’t” and “he’s BHEIND yous” to make it feel festive as an introduction to to the genre for smalls.

We love it, we adored this version and thoroughly recommend for atmosphere, festive fun and that all important visit to a theatre for children, who gain so very much from watching live performance. This one lasts just 60 minutes and is perfectly timed for a first visit!

Tickets are on sale now via The Garage, they cost £16.50 and the run continues until the 28th of December with various timed shows throughout.

We were invited to the show as guests of the theatre.
