Outdoor decor trends that actually last

Summer is almost here, and I’m always in a rush to make my garden look presentable for the season, which is a hard thing to do with three boys (including my husband). Despite the grass looking a bit tired after the cold winter months and several football games on it, the space can surely turn out to be good-looking with some proper changes and upgrades. For that, I have researched the outdoor decor trends and come up with what I think are the best options!

Since I have this struggle of making my garden look presentable each year, I’m opting for decorating it with pieces that actually last, and no more changes are made only for the season! While searching around, I noticed that many outdoor trends are pure “Instagram bait”, yes, pretty in photos, but impractical in real life. That’s why today I’m bringing you lasting trends that won’t go out of style and will stand the test of time (and the weather).

1. Bali Beds

If there’s one team that’s a must-have for me, which also combines a luxury touch with great durability, then a balinese bed is the best option. These types of beds are originally from the tropical villas of Indonesia, and are designed to last, withstanding the elements without losing their style.

While most of them are made of synthetic rattan or teak wood, you can easily find ones made from aluminum and other metals that can last even longer. Both materials are good at resisting the sun, rain, and humidity, and the best part is that they are not just for resorts and villas.

You can easily place them in your garden, terrace or by the pool and its durability won’t butch much. Also, you don’t need to worry about the stained or soaking wet cushions since they are made of waterproof fabrics. That’s why this is the go-to piece of furniture that lasts and stays on trend.

2. Metal Furniture with a Minimalist Design

While Bali beds are a great option, there are several other metal furniture with minimalist design that will do an amazing job, lasting longer and looking stylish. Stainless steel and aluminum are the kings of durable outdoor decor, which, unlike wood or plastic, it won’t rot or discolor that easily. It can withstand all types of weather.

Following this year’s trend, I will go with simpler, cleaner designs with straight lines and neutral colors. Already have in mind an aluminum table with tempered glass that is ideal for my garden and useful for Sunday barbecues.

It won’t rust, is easy to clean, and looks like it can survive my three boys playing around. Also, its style will match any change I decide later on. If you want something warmer or rustic, make sure you go for pieces that have touches of repurposed wood that’s combined with metals.

3. Integrated Solar Lighting

Lighting is always an issue in summer since finding something that can survive the winter months and my boys is not an easy task. At least that was the case until I found the solar lights, and I know what you’re thinking, but they are no longer those cheap little lamps that stop working in two months. Now there are elegant and powerful options, from lanterns to LED strips that can be embedded in the ground.

The most important thing about them and their main advantage is that they don’t require cables, are energy-efficient, and can last for years (but most importantly, can resist the rugby games my three boys have regularly). Plus, many have motion sensors, making them practical and safe.

Now, for this year’s trend, we are aiming to integrate them into the architecture. it may sound daunting, but it’s easy if you get to the right spots. For example, lighting hallways, stairs, paths, and even walls, but do it in a way that creates a cozy environment.

4. Durable Textiles

Cushions and curtains are always a headache, even if you rush to store them inside home after a sudden rain, most of them will end up wet and with stains. Fortunately, thanks to fabrics like polypropylene and olefin, we now have textiles that can repel water, don’t fade, and resist mold. They are perfect for any outdoor garden and can easily last a long time.

I will try to go for a minimal design or geometric prints and earth tones, which continue to dominate this year’s trends. On the other hand, if you’re looking for something more natural, then treated linen is another amazing option. While it may not last as long as the other fabrics, it will withstand elements for a long time, just don’t forget to pick one that has removable covers for easy washing. This way, your outdoor chair will always look like new.

5. Native and Low-Maintenance Plants

I know most people say that plants are not furniture, but It’s not all about furniture: greenery is also key to outdoor decor, and after long and cold winter nights, most of my garden’s plants, including the grass, are looking a bit sad. That’s why I decided to add some native and low-maintenance plants that actually look good.

So, instead of plants that require daily watering (and die within two weeks), I will be opting for native species or succulents.

The trend this year is for vertical gardens, and I will be combining them with succulents or herbs. They are trending because they take up little space and require little maintenance, but also look incredible good and can go well with a minimalistic design. Another option I liked a lot is small potted trees, like olive trees or ficus trees, which add an elegant touch without growing too large.

6. Composite Decking (Maintenance-Free)

If you have a patio or deck, you know that natural wood requires sanding, refinishing, and repair every year. The solution is composite decking, a material made from wood fibers and recycled plastic. It’s easy to work with, to clean, and maintain. Also, it doesn’t splinter, doesn’t need painting, and resists moisture and insects.

Plus, it comes in a variety of colors that mimic real wood. Following this year’s trend, I’ll opt for designs with warm grays and browns, perfect for a modern and lasting style.

Conclusion

Decorating your outdoor space doesn’t have to be a constant battle against the weather and the elements. With these lasting trends, me and you’ll have a beautiful and functional space for years to come. From an outdoor Bali bed to composite decking, each option is designed to withstand the elements and continue to look good.

So, why settle for throwaway decor? Invest in pieces that are truly worthwhile.
