Pokemon is something I have heard of before but only in a rather fleeting and not really understanding way. I have two little brothers who ten years ago made mention of it and from then on I’ve been vaguely aware that it’s some sort of computer game and that also you can buy merchandise… To say I’m a Pokemon novice is rather fair I’d say… It is, however, so popular that there are merchandise and trading cards, like those you can buy from Pokeflip, and there are even movies! Pokemon is HUGE!
Anyway, we were invited to the screening of the new Pokemon movie (yes, they make them as well) which was held at one of my favourite London hotels in Ham Yard and of course we went along to give it a go.
Two of the creators of Pokemon had flown in from Japan especially for the event which was filled to the brim with the young teen boy bloggers who are well known amongst their peers. They seemed terribly impressed in the foyer while Florence, Jimmy and I just tucked into some pastries and wondered if we should try and play one of the new games which were out?
As well as the film Pokemon Omega Ruby and Pokemon Alpha Saphire were available to have a go with although I felt we were probably a little young to give it a go ourselves. That doesn’t mean I didn’t hear good mutterings and appreciative sounds from the teens and even some of the grown ups in the know!
When it was time to go into the movie theatre I did wonder if it might all be completely over our heads and was a little worried we shouldn’t be there but the introducer said that Pokemon has something for everyone from the people like us with no knowledge right down to the hard fans so we settled back and hoped the movie would be something we could understand and enjoy.
It actually was really very good and we laughed as well as understanding the story even if there were certain facts we didn’t understand about ‘rules’ and who owns what and what, actually, a Pokemon really is? I can’t tell you the answer to any of those questions but I can tell you the film has a Princess who needs rescuing from some bad guys and the good guys become her friends. I quite like Japanese cartoons and this fitted that bill so the animation was familiar to me even if not to Florence and Jimmy however they still really enjoyed it.
Florence liked the Princess and Jimmy seemed to really enjoy all the Pokemon action with by the end I think I even sort of got. The one owned by the boy is called Picachu and rather cute. Definitely something for everyone! The semi geeky yet really cool teenage boy bloggers were just behind it and LOVING every second and for us, the novices going in blind, we just liked the story really!
It’s a good film which is enjoyable EVEN if you have no idea about Pokemon so if you do… Well, I’m guessing it’s an absolute hit!
We were invited to a screening of the Pokemon movie ‘Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction’
