Teaching Your Child to Safely Use the Internet

Millions of people around the world use the internet on a daily basis. It is great for providing us with information, entertainment, and socialisation and once you’ve found the best satellite internet providers you’re good to surf the world! However, for those who are naïve to the dangers of the internet, it can be quite a perilous place. With that said, parents should teach their children how to use the internet in a safe and responsible way. Here are some tips from a sixth form in Lincolnshire.

Talk About the Dangers of the Internet

Try to help your child understand what it is they need to avoid online by discussing some of the dangers. Of course, how much detail you choose to go into will depend on their age, but you can start by explaining that not everything online is appropriate for children. You should also explain that sometimes people pretend to be someone they’re not online to cause harm or violate people. Let them know that they can talk to you or another trusted adult if they see anything that makes them uncomfortable.

Ask What Apps & Websites They’re Using

When chatting to your child about internet safety, try and get some clarity about what they’re looking at and do some research in your own time to see if these apps and websites are suitable. If they’re not, explain to your child why you don’t want them using it. Be sure to reiterate that their safety is in your best interests.

Set Some Clear Rules

Talk to your child about what’s appropriate and inappropriate when using the internet. It will help if you set some clear rules for them to follow. Here are some examples:

• Never say or do anything online that you wouldn’t do face to face with someone
• Never say or do anything online that you wouldn’t want an adult to see
• Never share private information or intimate photos online
• Never make an online purchase without an adult’s permission
• Tell an adult if you see anything rude, scary, or unkind online
• Only use websites and apps that are age appropriate

It’s ok if your rules aren’t the same as other families – you need to do what feels right for your family.

Be a Good Role Model

Be sure to follow the advice you are giving your child, otherwise they are less likely to respect your rules. Talk to them about things you have seen online that were inappropriate so that they feel comfortable doing the same if it happens to them. Keep your passwords safe, and if you’re going to be posting a picture of your child on Instagram, ask their permission first.
