My bed, like my flat, is small… It’s a double apparently but I don’t think it really can be, I mean it feels small with two people in it and surely, being called a double, it shouldn’t?! It was not expensive!
When Jonny and bought our flat we had no idea what family life would be like, we were a young single couple so why would we? We chose it because it was a beautiful terrace conversion in the right area. We didn’t think about storage or about not having a garden for children to play in. We chose it without very much thought really and when we furnished it, having to buy things like a bed for the first time, we didn’t put much thought into that either and went down a catalogue and inexpensive route… Probably not the best idea with hindsight. Screws constantly fall out of it and it kind of rocks so it’s a good job we’re all not sea sickness sufferers. I say ‘ALL’ because of course we have two children now and where do you think they sleep?
In their beautiful shared bedroom? Nooooooo! Of course they don’t!
My Bed!
So, our already small bed is now extremely small indeed and our small flat which was perfect for two but flaming awful for four (I’ve read too much of ‘A Squash And A Squeeze’ at bed time) is even worse for storage because we have SO much more to store with four! Some examples are:
We have no airing cupboard. Seriously! I didn’t look for it, didn’t consider it and didn’t notice it’s lack when we bought. Only when I wanted to put away bedding and towels did I think OH!
We have one tiny drawer, a half sized drawer, in our kitchen and that’s it for drawer space. How ridiculous! Almost as if the kitchen designer of our shoe box cooking space didn’t know how many plastic spoons, tubs and cups children have!
We have to store loads of things under the beds because there is NOWHERE else to put everything and under mine I have two guitars, umpteen boxes and two massive storage baskets on wheels which are rubbish and fall apart every time (daily) you pull them out!
We have been inventive and Jonny has even built things like a box for the end of the bath which had a weird gap and Ikea have had a LOT of our custom for stuff which hangs on walls! However, there comes a limit and being inventive with quick fixes like the under the bed storage is not a long term solution. Just like four in a small double bed is not a long term sleep solution either. We either move or get more creative!
I don’t think we can afford to move just yet but if we invested some money in a proper bed we might just be able to kill a couple of birds with one stone!
Yesterday I was invited to come and see some of the Silentnight and Rest Assured range of beds and mattresses. Rest Assured beds are aimed at the 45+ market and people with back problems, they say it’s the range your back would choose, while Silentnight are more for everyone. I loved them both and after lying on more than a few yesterday I can totally see the appeal for the first time as to why money should be spent on where you sleep! You are, after all, in bed quite a lot. Well, you are if you’re not me who is usually half in bed and half out of it and not very often actually sleeping…
I had no idea at the immense ranges they have in their collections and you can mix and match any mattress with any base and head board. They were SO beautiful, so comfortable and best of all… They have SO much storage space if you want it!
They have sprung mattresses, memory foam mattresses, gel mattresses… The Geltex mattress was actually my favourite and it’s brand new. I was given a sample to squish and see how it works and it truly is AMAZING! Using groundbreaking technology they have developed a unique combination of unparalleled breathability, perfect pressure relief and optimal body support! Lie on one, you just won’t want to get up. The children thought it was fantastic and loved getting comfy, in fact we could have all quite happily stayed for a little snooze. One bed had a remote control to sit yourself up! The mattress actually moves! It was comfortorama!
And the storage… Well, that’s what swung it for me! I’d love one of the ottoman beds with two draws either side at the top. The ottoman lifts up super easily and has MASSES of storage at the foot of the bed. It doesn’t go all the way back as it would be too hard to reach but the drawers either side make sure the space isn’t wasted. It’s the perfect bed as far as I’m concerned! And when it’s topped with such a comfy, cosy mattress… Well!
The bed above is my perfect bed I think, it’s in the Heritage collection from Rest Assured but I would have a Geltex mattress from Silentnight to go with it if it was for me!
Some savings might have to happen I think!
I have not been paid to write this post in anyway.
