Tips for Encouraging Your Child to Study at Home
Studying at home will be essential for all students – both for those that are homeschooled and students that attend school. It will help them to retain all of the knowledge they’ve learnt over the weeks and months, that can ultimately contribute to good exam results. Here are some top tips to encourage your child to enjoy the process of studying at home.
Turn off all distractions
An easy set up will be to turn off the many distractions your child will turn to when they get bored or want to procrastinate. There can be a variety of distractions depending on what your child likes to spend their free time exploring, whether that’s playing video games or watching a lot of TV.
Removing them can cause issues at first with your child’s motivation but it will pay off in the end once they get into the groove of studying at home. This will be even more important when your child has to really focus on what they are learning about – in particular when they are working towards GCSEs or A Levels.
Set up an area that helps your child focus
While removing distractions will be a huge element of helping your child learn to focus in their own space, having a study area to work in will also help with their attention. They get to recognise what areas will help with their natural development, as well as giving them a lot of time to work hard with no one else around.
This will normally look like a study space where there is a desk, books and a comfortable chair for them to sit in and work. If necessary they may need access to a computer or a laptop, in which case you can look into ergonomic options for your child.
If your child receives a home education then this set up may already be in place. Whether you guide your child through a curriculum yourself or use an online academy to follow their studies, this is the perfect time to optimise a good learning space.
Make light rules about studying in the home
If there is a plan of action in mind when you give your child time to study they are more likely to follow it. Setting clear times to study is important so that they can keep up with all they’re learning both during school time and when they have free time to themselves.
Getting into a good routine when they’re a little older can help them get ready for important exams. There’s a lot at stake during these times so revising and accepting that you have to do that on a regular basis will help them enjoy the process a lot more.
So learning at home can be approachable and manageable for children. If you have your child set up in a good space it’s a great environment for them to learn, gain new skills and feel more confident in their studies.
