Using Colour to Spice Up Your Kitchen

We all know that there is immense value in having a handy kitchen, but what if I told you that it could be so much more?

Apart from simply being a functional place to cook and prepare food, the modern kitchen is now becoming an integral room to spend quality time in – everything from sharing gossip with friends to planning a day out with your family. The kitchen is not only a practical area, but also a beautifully designed and engaging room in your home.

To get the most out of your kitchen, regardless of its shape or size, we can harness the power of colour to great effect and really begin to make the room of our dreams. Read on to find out how.

Choose your tap variety

Most people would simply close their eyes and pick a kitchen tap at random just to be done with the process. But you’re not like most people, right? A tap needs to fit into your kitchen just like any other fixture. Nowadays, we get to think about how many handles the tap has, the spout design, and even the installation options. But all that is worthless until you have the right colour.

Taps are certainly more than just chrome, although I wouldn’t turn my nose up at that classic finish, either. Brass, matte black, and graphite are the current trending colours for taps, but if you simply browse around you’ll get the idea of which tap best suits you and your home.

Switch up your drawers and cabinets

It’s difficult to suggest one colour to paint your drawers and cabinets, but I’d have to say that dark forest green is especially popular at the moment. It’s such a warm, cosy shade that can’t help but draw you into the room and feel welcome.

Of course, let’s not forget the handles and knobs are also an integral part of the kitchen. Soft brass is never a bad colour for handles to your drawers and cabinets, as ideally you need something that contrasts heavily from the base paint to help stand out.

Checkerboard floors make a comeback

It’s safe to say that the classic checkerboard floor tiling is hotter than ever. This style may have gone out of fashion in the last 10 years, with many homeowners opting for a traditional black tile or unassuming wood finish. Many people love the checkerboard floor for the bathroom, but I say that the kitchen is far more eye-catching and unexpected in today’s kitchens.

While black-and-white is the usual colour scheme for checkerboard floors, it’s not unheard of to even go with something brave and daring like white and red or perhaps black and yellow. That might be too extreme for you, but the point is that the kitchen floor makes a strong impact on any first visit to your home.

Shock everyone with bold and bright furniture

It’s fair to say that a lot of people don’t have space for furniture in their kitchen, but if you’re one of the lucky few, then here’s where you can really have fun. If you have a kitchen island or bench top, then more than likely you have some stools.

It’s true that stools aren’t great for long periods of sitting, but for a quick chat in the kitchen or to read the morning newspaper (or more likely on your phone) with a coffee, then a stool is a must-have furniture item for the kitchen. But what about the colour, you ask? I say throw caution to the wind and opt for a pair of shiny, golden stools.

Are golden stools a bit ostentatious? Yes, but you’ll amaze yourself every time you visit the kitchen and it’s simply nice to have such an adventurous colour in the home, as let’s face it… golden chairs in the living room or bedroom would look out of place. Go for gold and you’re automatically a winner.
