A New Flavour To An Old ‘Squashies’ Favourite – How ‘Sweet’!

This entry was posted in Uncategorized.

We were invited to take a trip down memory lane yesterday, or rather I was and Florence was invited to come and see what childhood was like in my day – the 80’s! At the Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green, a place we love, love , love and visit regularly, Swizzels Matlow were holding a launch party for their new range of sweets, Squashies!

Squashies are old f’L’avourites with a modern squashy twist and they’re absolutely yum! I positioned myself by that bowl on the left for quite some time – I’m not silly! Remember Drumstick Lollies, Love Hearts, Refreshers and Double Lollies? I certainly do! My Mum used to give me 20p most days to spend on sweets (my sweet tooth didn’t really mature much either as I’m still a big fan now) so I was somewhat of a sweet connoisseur! My oldest friend Ange and I would go into ‘Mollies’ our local sweet shop on the way home from school and spend ages deliberating on which ones to buy. 20 penny sweets (our Mum’s would have a massive roll of the eyes on those days because we’d take even longer choosing), something from the sweet jars to be measured out, a chocolate bar or a packet of sweets and a lolly??

I was a ‘Love Heat’ girl! I always found something really exciting about reading each message and then passing on to my Mum or a friend, the ones which I felt about them. I would still give Jonny my love hearts now, I love the ones that read ‘Be Mine’! They’re such a great valentines day gift too and this year I might make some cup cakes with them on as decorations! The new ‘Squashies’ versions are totally divine and although they taste really similar they’re SO different! Jelly soft versions but still with that same great message – just a little bit different!

We had a fab time at the party reminiscing about old sweets and eating our body weight in the new versions of them. My sister-in-law (who writes workitmamma) and I must’ve hoovered up a fair few as when we were walking round the museum later on we both felt a bit sugar drunk! I think I’ve worked out why my Mum used to ban cherry aid, too much sugar might make me a little bit crazy… But good crazy and hey, in moderation it’s ok – yesterday I don’t think I could call myself moderate when it came to the sweety jars and neither could I say that for the children, but it was only once! At points my nephew Arthur had so many sweets in his mouth he looked like a hamster and Florence was going through them like she’d never before been allowed something sweet – which I think anyone who knows Florence would vouch for not being true! But it was a treat and we don’t usually eat sweets in such vast quantities. It’s a good idea then that the bags of ‘Squashies’ come in resealable big bags that can be put away and still keep fresh. They also come in smaller bags which are perfect for a little sweet treat! The children enjoyed the party SO much and dancing away to the 80’s music they played games, had their faces painted and, well, enjoyed the sweets!

With dancing, face painting, party food, pass the parcel and of course sweets, the children couldn’t have had anything BUT a good time at the Swizzels Matlow Squashies Launch Party!

By the time Sarah Louise Meslop, Marketing Manager at Swizzels Matlow, cut the cake you’d have thought we’d all be a bit too full of sweets to oblige by eating a slice… Funnily enough, we managed it – I’ll calorie count next week, I really will!

I had a great time at the launch and I really like the sweets too! My favourite are the ‘Drumstick Squashies’, they’re SO yum I even ate a packet last night – again, I’ll eat healthily all next week!

End of the party and a squash on a bean bag! (I want a ‘Squashies’ bean bag at home then I could eat my sweets in the utmost squashy comfort!)
