How to dress for the races
With race season about to commence, now is the time to start planning what you’re going to wear to each meet. Whether you already own an outfit you can use again, or if you’re in the market for something brand new, there are some dos and don’ts you should abide by.
Thanks to the often strict dress codes that many racing establishments still have in place, it can be incredibly easy to end up buying something you’ll never wear again, such as that huge hot pink fascinator. But, there are some sure-fire ways to make sure that you not only feel like yourself, but you’re comfortable and stylish, all at the same time.
For the ladies
First things first. Let’s start with shoes. You’re going to be on your feet all day, standing to cheer on your winner. Of course, everyone wants to wear a pair of heels; and while stilettoes are perhaps not the most practical option, why not opt for a style with a chunky heel or even a smart pair of wedges.
Remember, the races is the perfect opportunity to rock your favourite bold colour, as long as you mix it with a stylish and sophisticated shape. Think midi or maxi over mini, and remember that too much cleavage can draw away from your beautiful new ensemble. Something from Styleaisle might work for you?
On the subject of accessories, here is your time to shine! If you think you’ll never wear a fascinator again, don’t buy one. Spend your money on something you will wear again. It’s important to remember however, that certain races or enclosures have specific requirements when it comes to your hats.
The rule for the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot is that you must wear a headpiece that has a solid base of at least four inches. So, remember to check the dress code before you hit the shops!
For the gents
Fashion at the races is almost more important than the horse racing itself, even for the gents. Whether it’s your first time there or you’re a seasoned professional, standing out from a sea of grey suits is important.
Just like for the ladies, it’s important to check the specific races dress rules on what is and isn’t allowed. Some are a bit dressier, some a bit more casual.
If you’re heading to Royal Ascot, gents are required to wear a black or grey morning suit which includes a waistcoat and tie (no cravat), a black or grey top hat, black shoes with socks.
Other racing meets may have a much more relaxed dress code, here is where you can be a little bolder with your colour choices! Why not opt for a striking blue suit, or even a dusty pink if you dare? Whatever you decide to go for, you can still strive to be as stylish as your female counterpart.
Check the rules, but dress to impress
If you’re ready to hit the shops to find that perfect outfit, you’ll need to have a budget in mind to keep you on the right track. You might consider putting it on a credit card if it’s bit more than you’d usually spend, but remember to pay the balance off in full so you avoid any interest and charges. Whatever you choose, you’re certain to shine next to the course.
