Shut The World Out, Or Bring It Right Back In!
I’m sure, like me, a lot of people came to realise the importance of being home, slowing down, and enjoying our own spaces when we were given no choice but to stay put. I’m very much a “make the best of it” kind of person so, after an initial panic at lockdown times in 2020, I threw myself into treating the time as a gift. And it was. Not just a gift of time well spent with my family but a gift of time offered to really discover my style and loves when it came to decoration.
I threw myself into the décor and though I’ve absolutely no skill whatsoever when it came to the art of it, I gave it my best shot. We’d lived in our house for four years and done barely a thing. With that wonderful time advantage I was able to not only make much needed decisions, but implement a lot of them too!
I realised I was not a Pinterest and Instagram re creator when it came to decorating. The feel of that moment was all grey velvet cushions and fancy wall paper but I just found myself wrinkling up my nose. It wasn’t for me and with the perspective of really being able to see how living in my home all of the time worked for us as a family, I could finally find the answers to the things I’d been wondering.
We’d not had curtains or blinds in many of the rooms because I just couldn’t make a decision. I don’t really like curtains, they’re expensive and fancy and just, to me, annoying! But what to have? I realised as I watched, through the kitchen window, my husband finally disposing of our Christmas tree (it was March) that I hated the way people could see into our home, but I adored being able to see out. Curtains would encroach on the room I decided, I’d been right to veto them early on but regular blinds wouldn’t work either. I didn’t want it to look like an office. My kitchen has a country vibe, traditional, classic… It suddenly became clear that what we really needed were shutter blinds!
Living, working, relaxing and enjoying our lives within our home for such a long period of time gave me the perfect insight into what would work for my large family. It was always going to be shutter blinds, I just hadn’t realised until then. Not only would they afford us to shut the world out when we wanted to cosy up inside, saving us energy as they assisted to keep the heat in (never been more important than now, eh?!) but we could also throw them wide open, or raise the slats depending on how we would feel on any given day.
It worked for me!
Wooden, traditional, classic. That’s my style, I’ve decided and shutter blinds fit perfectly right into that vibe. I like the understated, yet the beautiful. The things which work in harmony to a bare window and the bones of the room without taking over, and yet still being the crowning glory! What a juxtaposition! Yet here we are, shutter blinds are the way forward!
The Shutter Store can offer assistance with final decisions, whether you plump for full height, café style, tier on tier or solid like in a French chateau, they’re the experts who can quote you for the perfectly measured to your window shutters which will work for you!
For me it’s not just about looking fashionable, although shutters never go out of style, it’s about being practical and economical. I’m all about natural materials, wood works perfectly in my home but you can choose faux wood or waterproof materials if they might work better in your space.
These days we are all spending so much time in our own homes through choice, a plus to the time forced upon us, inviting us to slow down. Because of that we owe ourselves the treat of being comfortable and in love with our surroundings don’t you think? Shutters were always at the back of my mind, I’m now dead set on the idea. How about you?
