With my third baby starting school this year I’ve was reminded of the magic learning to read gifts. I remember it well from the big two but had forgotten how beautiful an experience it is to be watching them pick up quite literally a new language with the ability to see through a window into another world. To be able to read, to sit and entertain yourself with words is something perhaps we take for granted once we can do it but right now, in the middle of helping Raffie unlock this secret key has been one of the greatest pleasures.

The big two no longer need me to sit with them and read and I guess that’s why I’d forgotten its beauty. We don’t consider being able to read road signs or a letter, it’s just something we can do. Like riding a bike we never forget but we do forget quite how incredible this talent is. Only when we are helping a little one learn do we stop and consider its magnitude in life. What would we not be able to do without the skill and think of the possibilities once we have it…

Raffie is soaring with his reading. He took to it like a duck to water and watching it click into place felt very rapid but he is a beginner, he needs to practice and we read with him often. He has school books which he reads to us in the evenings and we read to him also. That’s very important always and this is something Posie can get involved with too. She is an emergent reader herself having watched Raffie and she picks books up, turns the pages and says the parts of the stories she can remember out loud. I love that. Raffie has favourite books and we encourage him by showing him new books which capture his imagination and tap into the stages he is at right now. Books2Door have a fabulous new subscription service which can help your little readers, as well as entertaining them in many ways, whichever stage of the reading process they are at!
