Supporting your child with their mental health

As parents, it is important to make sure that your child is supported through every stage in their life. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and should be given the same attention throughout their development. This is due to the heavy impacts it can have on education, relationships and physical wellbeing. Mental health can change to different degrees over time which means you need to be giving them constant attention, as there is no one time fix for it. Negative experiences can take a hefty toll on a child’s mental health, and lead to bigger complications later on, if not given the right attention straight away. So, what can be done? Model the correct coping skills

When your child is very young, you can help them learn how to deal with their emotions in a healthy way. You can do this by practising them together at home. This could simply be talking to them regularly about how they feel and what to do based on each situation. For example, if you notice your child gets overwhelmed easily, teach them deep breathing techniques. For children who are anxious, teach them to find healthy escapes such as art or taking a short walk.

Watch out for behavioural changes

It is quite normal for children to go through different changes in their behaviour whilst they progress through different developmental stages. However, if you notice that your child has withdrawn from their friends and family, and is isolating themselves, it may be a sign that they are going through something that they are unable to process alone. Check in with your child regularly to let them know that you are there for them no matter what. Remind them that you will support them regardless of the situation.

Be open and honest

It is important your child knows that they can come to you about anything. A home space that practices love and understanding will make it easier for your child to come to you with their worries. Simply let them know that you are always there and care for them a lot. Remind them on a regular basis as this will help to strengthen their bond with you.

Provide positive feedback

Children love to be given positive feedback when they have done something well. This helps increase levels of pride and confidence, which can stick with them long term.
