Taking the kids to Portugal

With alluring deep-blue seas, a wealth of fun activities for kids of all ages, and only a couple of hours’ flight time away, Portugal is a fabulous destination for family holidays. Often overlooked in favour of Spanish hotspots like Benidorm or the Costa del Sol, the western country of the Iberian Peninsula offers just as much joy and delight as its counterpart next door.

The Algarve

If you’re looking for a sun-kissed adventure, your first port of call should be the Algarve. Nestled at the south edge of the country, this region has a beautiful coast and spectacular coves that are renowned the world over. While its popularity means there is a lot of development, there are still hidden azure treasures to be found in the small white beaches dotted across the coast.

The Algarve provides a bevy of activities for your little ones to enjoy. The ZooMarine Water Theme Park is an absolute must for making a splash – playing host to swimming pools, waterslides and wave machines. They also have daily shows featuring the park’s dolphins, seals and sea lions that will wow your little ones.

Lisbon

If you are looking to take in some of the real Portugal, why not visit the capital, Lisbon? With centuries of history on Europe’s Atlantic frontier, there is much to learn, and many historical sites and monuments to impress. Any trip to the capital wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Torre de Belem. Built in the 1500s as a fortress to guard the gateway to the city, it now stands as a monument to the country’s golden age of discovery.

If you’d rather experience the modern side of Portugal, take a trip to the newly developed Parque das Nações. Home to one of the world’s largest oceanariums, as well as vast shopping malls, you won’t be short of things to see and do. And if the family all have a head for heights, why not take a trip along the Telecabine Lisboa? This cable car ride offers stunning views right across the Tagus estuary.

Whether you want a relaxing time in the sun, or an activity-packed holiday to a beautiful and historic Mediterranean country, Portugal offers everything you need for an unbeatable family holiday.
