If you have children, girls OR boys, they you will probably have heard of the Disney film ‘Frozen’. There’s no getting away from it really is there and although I did try and resist Disney magic for my household, something about it just meant we couldn’t. Is it commercial? Yes. Is it big business? Of course! But… They just know what they’re doing over at Disney HQ and when you’re that much of an expert I suppose it doesn’t really matter how much money you make by doing it.
Frozen made us fall in love, head over heels in fact, with Disney and we’ve not looked back. Both my children love everything about it and get so much enjoyment from the films, toys, theatre productions… Basically, if it has a Disney stamp then I can pretty much guarantee they will like it. Simples.
So Frozen made us love Disney but I actually think the older, more traditional stories are my faves. Lady and the Tramp, Jungle Book and Robin Hood being my top picks. I also love and have always loved, Winnie-the-Pooh. A. A. Milne’s loved character and his friends Christopher Robin, Eeyore, Piglet et al are all now part of the Disney Family and frankly you can’t go wrong with a bit of Winnie. Such wonderful, wonderful words which have been quoted the world over and such beautiful stories made up of those words as well as traditional illustrations. When we left London recently my friend quoted this in our leaving card:
‘How lucky I am to have something which makes saying goodbye so hard.’
I remember thinking wow, she’s brought out the big guns, she’s brought out WINNIE-THE-POOH! And of course I cried.
There’s something so charming and so delightful about Winnie-the-Pooh and it shows that Disney has a much softer side to all the glitz of their other charges that they have adopted him as one of their own. It’s the character for tiny ones to fall in love with and parents to pick as nursery themes and soft toys from the very start but there’s no age limit on Winnie as my friend with the pen shows. He’s a character to be loved for a life time and now Disney have brought him bang up to date by giving him an interactive, interesting website for littles.
Disney has partnered with Google to create an interactive, three-dimensional version of Winnie-the-Pooh’s Hundred Acre Wood built using Google Maps. Targeted at parents with young children, the interactive Hundred Acre Wood offers games, stories, videos and activities – all themed around the different characters and stories from Winnie-the-Pooh.
The Hundred Acre Wood can be found on disneybaby.co.uk, and aims to provide mums and dads with a moment of fun and inspiration for everyday life from ideas to mark baby’s first milestones to activities for all the family to enjoy.
We’ve been taking a look and although babies mine are no longer, they’ve been enjoying the webiste all the same. As have I! If for nothing else (and there’s lots else actually) the moment you open the website it tells you where you are in the world and what the weather is like today – I obviously know where I am but a weather update is always welcome don’t you think?!
It’s been pretty rainy where we are as it goes and the site has asked us if we’d like to play a game for inside the house. It’s just a simple shape sorting game, perfect for the abilities of tiny ones with it’s 3D look and interesting Winnie-the-Pooh shapes but my two have been loving it regardless of their age. They’ve also found looking around Hundred Acre Wood with all the different elements most enjoyable!
Inside the map you can explore each of the characters homes moving around 360 degrees and also, each one has its very own beautiful ‘Pooh’ quote. Learn about first milestones with Pooh, listen to a bedtime soundtrack with Wise old Owl, download games from Tigger and much, much more.
With learning tools, stories, songs and games which all contain the gentleness we expect from Winnie-the-Pooh I see this as a website to sit in the middle of the night soothing a teething baby with. A website to explore with a tiny one at quiet moments in the day time too and something which parents can utilse as a useful tool. F and J have been using the site both on their own and with me and have been enjoying it immensely. I think the exploration of a map for them is super exciting and the visuals certainly are brilliant. Obviously it is for younger children than them and for parents to explore with their babies and I think this is an absolutely teriffic idea.
Winnie-the-Pooh wins again! What a fabulous idea! Hundred Acre Wood can be found at http://www.disney.co.uk/disney-baby/winnie-the-pooh/ and we hope that you enjoy it as much as we have. You can also follow Winnie on Facebook or Twitter.
