A Little Slice of Calm at Robin Lodge
Robin Lodge is one of those places that instantly softened the edges of the day. We arrived with bags, children, snacks, jumpers, all the usual chaos, and yet the moment we stepped inside it felt calm. A proper little hideaway tucked near Burgh Castle, just far enough from everything to feel like a break, but close enough (especially to an M&S food hall) that nothing was a faff. It was exactly what we needed at the end of the summer holidays, a chance to gather everyone together and just be a family without the usual distractions.
The owner is a friend and had invited us knowing full well that the little ones would end up bundled into our bed anyway, so although Robin Lodge technically sleeps four, it suited us perfectly. It felt warm and welcoming from the start. Clean in that sparkling way that makes you relax instantly, beautifully laid out, and so modern and up to date that it felt like stepping into a brand new home. Everything was fresh, everything was thoughtful, everything was easy.
The location is wonderful for families. Burgh Castle is just a short drive for a family walk away, its ruins rising out of the landscape with that quiet, ancient presence that makes children stop and stare. We wandered along the paths with the marshes stretching out around us, the air soft and still, the children racing ahead and looping back again (of course moaning about a family walk because they are children, but they enjoyed it despite themselves). It is the kind of walk that feels effortless and full of discovery, it’s only one mile in a loop so after coaxing along to begin it, they forgot they were walking on an actual walk (horrors for teens) because the surroundings do all the work. Peaceful without being dull, beautiful without being showy, and exactly the sort of place that makes you want to return before you have even left.
And that’s not all there is to do either, Just across the car park is Burgh Hall, where we used the swimming pool. It costs £10 per person for the whole day which is brilliant if the sun is out and you can dip in and out, the lodge is literally next door. We only had bursts of sunshine so we negotiated an hourly rate at half price, which they kindly agreed to, and then they knocked one person off the booking too. They were friendly and welcoming and the restaurant must be popular because the car park was absolutely rammed. It had that buzzy feeling of somewhere people genuinely love. We had so much fun in the pool which was warm and had depth levels to suit everyone!
Inside, the comfort levels were something else. The sofa was comfier than ours at home, which is telling me I need to upgrade, and the beds excellent too. The children were thrilled to find televisions in both bedrooms and the one in the living room was so enormous it felt like sitting in a cinema. We curled up together in the evenings watching films and feeling like we had our own private little world.
The kitchen was a dream. Cleverly designed, everything in the right place, everything easy. A breakfast bar and a dining table meant we could spread out or gather in depending on the moment. Every cupboard had exactly what you needed and there were thoughtful touches everywhere. Dishwasher tablets, teas and coffees, milk waiting in the fridge. It felt welcoming, like someone had thought about the small things that make a stay feel effortless. We cooked, we chatted, we lingered over meals, and it all felt simple and relaxed.
We played games and did puzzles, the kind of things that get forgotten at home when life is busy and everyone is pulled in different directions. Being away meant we had no distractions, no chores calling, no screens tugging at us. Just time. Real time. The children loved it and so did we. It reminded me how important it is to carve out these pockets of togetherness, where the only thing that matters is being with each other.
All in all, our two night stay at Robin Lodge was exactly what we needed. A chance to slow down, to reconnect, to enjoy each other without the usual rush of everyday life. A lovely lodge, a lovely location and a lovely reminder that sometimes the simplest breaks are the ones that stay with you. It was the perfect way to finish the summer holidays and we would go back in a heartbeat.
Facilities on site include 2 park/play areas, plenty of space for ball games and a restaurant and bar as part of the swimming pool complex. A short ten minute drive away is a plethora of food and other shops and within another few minutes you can be at the beach front in either Great Yarmouth or one of the other close by beaches.
