Little Big Songs!

This entry was posted in Uncategorized.

We have lots of children’s CDs in this house. Mainly of the Disney variety and almost always Florence’s choice is what we get to listen to in the car. It’s tough being a little brother!

Sometimes it’s good to take a rest from the princess themed songs (enjoyable as they are) and listen to something else though but for children what else is there?

Nursery rhymes… Yes, but what else?

Well, we think we’ve found something. Something a little bit different, suitable for both our children and also something that we enjoy too!

Jerry O’Regan, a musician and writer from Edinburgh, has created a CD of original, sing-along songs telling real-life stories from a young child’s point of view. They’re really cool!

The album is called Little Big Songs and includes songs about who’s who in the family, the foods we eat, moving house and telling the time. It also celebrates simple pleasures like watching a ladybird and making a wish. These are all real, everyday experiences which a young child can immediately relate to!

The songs all have a band behind them and are, what I would call, ‘proper songs’! The CD is really different and interesting! A great addition to our car songs collection!

“The pre-release feedback has been amazing,” says Jerry. “There’s a gap between nursery rhymes and character-led songs from children’s TV, and Little Big Songs fills it with songs about real things that young children care about and want to know more of. They are refreshingly different to much of what is out there for young children right now.”

Some of the songs on the Little Big Songs CD first saw the light of day on BBC schools radio 25 years ago, and there’s a definite ‘educational’ feel to the collection, without in any way losing the fun element.

“That’s no bad thing,” says Jerry. “It’s important that you can hear every word, grasp the story, and as you listen you understand more and enjoy more. Listening is such an important skill, essential for communication and the foundation of reading. So if Little Big Songs encourage listening, I’m delighted.”

Well we’ve certainly been listening and we like what we’ve heard very much! Super fun story/songs!

There are also some pretty gorgeous illustrations by Manchester based artist Peter Seal which can be seen on the website with some song videos for free.
