Have A Legal Leg To Stand On!

Thankfully I’ve not had much call to use a solicitor in my life so far. In fact the only time I have used one was when we bought our house and unfortunately, because of a lack of knowledge and research, we didn’t employ the right one to deal with all our conveyancing… In fact that’s a bit of an understatement. We employed someone who in fact left out a retention in our contract that he had been instructed to include and he did not read our contract or advise us well at all…

The result? Well a bit of a bill for us when the vendor then refused to honour what the retention would have covered and now… A MASSIVE hoohaa with our freeholder which had we understood our contract might not have happened. But then why would we understand our contract? We don’t have any legal training! We employed someone to do that for us and paid them accordingly! But they didn’t do their job and it just means we’re more out of pocket because of it! Now even in the possible need for a solicitor again because of the bungle in the beginning but we will be much more savvy this time!

I think our story shows that it pays to do your research and to look closely at which solicitor you employ. There are things I have been looking out for because now I have experience and now I know what we don’t want!

It’s just like house hunting really; when we bought the house, as well as employing a bit of a silly solicitor, we weren’t looking at the property properly either! There is no airing cupboard and my kitchen only has one tiny drawer. I didn’t even see that when we loved the house but now we have ‘previous’ we know that there are little but very important things to check like that – I mean who doesn’t need an airing cupboard?! It was the same employing the solicitor, we just did it without thought!

So I’ve been doing proper research just in case, looking at websites and checking them out properly! Irwin Mitchell Solicitors show a very transparent look into their business on their website. As soon as you look at their site you see testimonials which are part of their home page and it’s very easy to navigate your way around finding exactly what you are looking for. Right down to meeting the people who work there by viewing their personal profiles everything is open. This is not something we were even on the look out for let alone something that was vaguely on our radar as important. But it is! Very!

When you employ a solicitor you need them to know their stuff unlike our one from back when! Unless you know law yourself you have to be able to trust who you employ and you need to know they are working for you to earn the money you are parting with. If you knew what was what and it was easy to do then you WOULD do it yourself but not many of us do and it’s really not; that is why we need someone we can trust!

Hopefully we won’t need a solicitor for anything else in the future other than house related stuff but there are many things when you might need one for both personal and business! Medical, family and employment law to name but a few! Worth remembering, I’d say, that research is the key! It’s not good to need legal advice but when you do need it you need it to be good!
