6 ways to Improve the value of your home through your garden

When it comes to increasing the value of your home many forget that the garden can boost the likelihood of a sale and increase the probability of a rise in value. This is Money suggests that by investing in your garden you could see an 88% return on that investment, as it boosts the property value.

People viewing your property will be looking for certain items in the back yard and if yours is an empty space with some patchy grass seed and a few sad garden chairs then here are six ways to spruce it up, to improve the value of your home:

  1. Make it green

It’s a garden, so it needs plants and even if you’re a terrible gardener you can pick up some hardier varieties to ensure they don’t wither and die within a few weeks. A freshly laid lawn, or a revamped one with grass seed, plus colourful hanging baskets and some border plants will give your garden a healthy, inviting look.

If you’re really bad with plants then you could pick up some artificial ones to spruce your outdoor space up, hanging topiaries and artificial flowers in hanging baskets not only look great but look that way all year round and you don’t need to worry about watering them or frost. Bear in mind though that this can confuse pollinating insects, so it’s a good idea to mix up your artificial plants with some real ones.

  1. Build a shed

Putting up a high quality shed that fits in well with the aesthetics of the garden is a good way of increasing the value of your home. People look for storage space when viewing a home, so if they know you’re leaving that outdoor shed that can house all their gardening and DIY tools it might sway them compared to a property that doesn’t have one. Ensure yours is easy to lock up as well, security is also important.

  1. Lay down a patio

A patio area will help improve the value of your property as it offers people a vision of where they can entertain on those long summer evenings. Ensure yours is clean (get that pressure washer out if yours is suffering from a case of slimy moss) and re-do the grouting if this has chipped away over time to ensure it looks fresh and new.

  1. Pick up a nice looking dining set or garden chairs

Finish off the patio area with a comfortable looking outdoor dining set, if you want to improve value further and know those viewing your property are first time buyers offer to throw this in with the house price as an incentive.

  1. Put up good fencing

Good fencing not only improves the look of your garden but it provides enhanced security for the property itself, therefore improving your chances of increasing the value of your home.

  1. Hang outdoor lighting

Outdoor lighting is great when it comes to security and also improving the look of your garden when the dark sets in. Solar lights dotted around the lawn will look pretty and shine some light when guests visit in the summer months and a motion sensor light that works between certain hours is great for deterring intruders and can increase the value of your home.

Potential buyers want to move into somewhere they don’t need to do much to and if your garden has all the important features it’s likely they’ll pay more for it. If you’re looking to simply improve the look of your garden and have all these things in place, then consider signing up for magazine subscriptions for publications such as Amateur Gardening to enhance your knowledge of caring for an outdoor space, that you can take with you to a new property in the future.
