London Transport Museum – February Half Term!

I frequently talk about the London Transport Museum on my stories as it’s just the most brilliant place to pop into when in town with the kids. I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, this is one of the best value tickets going in London as a day pass IS in fact an annual and to make things even better you won’t have to pay a singal penny for the kiddos. When we lived in London it was a no brainer that we kept up to date with being ticket holders as there’s much to keep little ones entertained and they LOVE visiting. Even now that we don’t live close it’s still an excellent ticket as for just £16.00 a year for the grown ups (£13.50 concessions) you can have a year’s worth of fun! The price is £1.50 more on the door but still… It’s pretty blooming reasonable don’t you think!

Once inside we are creatures of habit and have to start at the beginning even though it’s tempting to take short cuts to our most favourite exhibits like the talking horses, tube train with the 1970s dummies and crossing the road – I realise that doesn’t sound much like fun but just you wait… Th kids LOVE it! But… If you start at the beginning then you don’t miss out on any of the stamps for the stamp trail (important if you’re a kid – or, err, me!) and you get to go back in time, actual back in time, in the lift!

Start in the 1800s you get to see what transport was like in the capital city through the ages making this is an absolutely fascinating museum whatever your age! Hands on exhibitions, fabulous play areas and varying different specials for school holidays! This February half term is no exception and the activities highlight the museum’s amazing Women in Transport project where kids can enjoy storytime sessions discovering the women who have kept London moving, and create a poster to take back to school after the holidays. You don’t NEED the extras the museum lay on for when school’s out as the ordinary is pretty fabulous but we appreciate them all the same and they’re always fab! It’s worth noting that the restaurant above the museum shop is also YUMMY and very reasonable especially when it comes to kids meals!

Having fun at the Transpot Museum when they were tiny these two still love going now just as much as they did back then!

Talking of the museum shop you must check it out whether visiting the museum or not. They have some stunning pieces and I just love the furniture covered in moquette which is the same material that covers chairs on London trains and buses and in the same patterns too. When we left London we bought a magazine rack to remind us of or days there and I love how it’s a talking point for whoever comes into our living room because everyone likes it so much!

Can you spy my moquette magazine rack next to my fireplace here?!

From furniture and art you can buy all sorts of gorgeous pieces in the shop which isn’t your typical museum gift shop in that sense at all! At Christmas we had the most wonderful Christmas jumpers from there and now this Valentine’s Day you can buy your love a terrific mug personalised with anything you like from L for Love to the initial of their name. It’s something really different and terribly thoughtful so get your orders in quick so that they arrive on time. You can shop their store on line here!

Personalised mug, £14.99 from the London Transport Museum shop – Johnston (or Johnston Sans) is a sans-serif typeface designed by and named after Edward Johnston.. The typeface was commissioned in 1913 by the commercial manager of the Underground Electric Railways Company of London as part of his plan to strengthen the company’s corporate identity and has been the corporate font of public transport in London since 1933, and of predecessor companies since its introduction in 1916, making its use one of the world’s longest-lasting examples of corporate branding.

We are making the London Transport museum a priority to visit this February half term, how about you? If you can’t make it into town just yet don’t worry because the museum has lots of fun things planned for the next while and in March they will be hosting a special Wellbeing Weekend where you can find out more about planning activities and journeys via public transport to lovely hidden spots in London, as well as many more fun creative activities. Then, over the Easter holidays, they will be joined by amazing illustrators who are part of their new exhibition London Stories. The artists will be talking about their artwork and telling the stories their colourful displays were inspired by.

That’s not to forget the year-round events we love, including Museum singing and storytime sessions during term time and Acton tours during school holidays. They also have a special Acton Open Weekend in July for families which looks so much fun!

More information about all of the family events are on their website here.
