Stick Man Live – 2019!
We’ve seen Stick Man Live in the West End a fair few times but we will always go back for more because it’s one of the best! In fact, it might be my actual favourite of the season when it comes to theatre experiences for children. I’d go a long way to see this show and hear those songs (you can’t buy a CD would you believe, they need them on Spotify NOW for we sing them ALL year) and so would the children. It doesn’t matter how old they get they always say ‘Can we see Stick Man again this year?!’!
I took Jimmy (7) and Raffie (2) and I would say they both equally enjoyed it (Florence would have too but was poorly and couldn’t make it. To say she was gutted is an understatement as even at nearly 10 this is one of her favourites!)and I’m not sure there’s many things you can say that about when it comes to my children! Having such a big age gap between the big two and the baby does mean that very often one or two of them have to just join in with something they’d rather not but not so here. Not so at all!
Stick Man, who lives in the family tree, with his stick lady love and their stick children, one, two, three… Is performed by three actors (one of the a musician) and is just the most delightful piece of family friendly theatre that you could imagine. Songs, acting, the amazingly clever use of props… Oh this show is an absolute dream it really is and frankly I’d be happy to see it daily!
This show is SUPER festive with of course a visit from Santa as well as all the other loved favourites from the Julia Donaldson book like the dog, and the girl and the swan… I simply don’t know how a children’s book can literally come alive in such a vivid and perfectly true to the pages way. But Scamp Theatre do it… Oh wow do they do it!
We went with the gang from Modern Mummy (as always and yet another reason why Flobo was so sad to miss out) and looking at five shining sets of eyes matched with five grins from ear to ear on all the kiddos in our party was almost, but not quite, worth taking your eyes off the stage for.
Jonny said he doesn’t know if it’s because he’s a primary school teacher now and far more in tune with entertaining children but that this is the best year he’s ever seen it. The slickest and with the best cast. I don’t know about that, it always seems amazing to me but it was certainly memorable and the actors definitely had a rapport with the audience. Stick Man’s wink, wink is rather funny! We were in good company too for none other than Mr Noel Fielding was there with his family and he looked like he was enjoying it just as much as us. Oh Stick Man… Can we just come and see you every week please?!
If you go to see one show with your children in London this Christmas season then make it Stick Man! You won’t regret it!
Theatre Advice: The Leicester Square Theatre is perfect for families once inside the auditorium and they make children VERY welcome with booster cushions. It’s roomy and easy to get out if you need the toilet BUT… There is one big downfall in that to get to the seats you need to go down a very long, steep set of stairs. They welcome buggies and I have always been helped with mine so it’s not a major issue but for utter ease, if you can, don’t take one and if you do then just not that’s the case as I know it can be qiute stressful arriving somewhere and being greeted with stair! Believe me they are worth the climb!
Stick Man Live in the West End is showing from the 30th of November 2019 to the 26th of January 2020 at the Leicester Square Theatre, London. Book tickets through the box office.
We were invited to see Stick Man Live as guests of the theatre.
