Taking Care Of Your Family’s Health This Summer

The sun is out, the temperature is rising, and a lot of us are glad to be spending some time out in the great outdoors. However, the summer brings more than sunshine with it. It also brings with it a host of seasonal health woes that can cause you and your family plenty of strife if you’re not equipped for them.

Here, we’re going to look at some of the seasonal nasties that tend to spring up in the summer and what you can do to make sure that you’re taking good care of your family.

Prepare for the big trip

If, like many people, you are planning some trip, be it to places near or far, in the near future, you should make sure that you’re all set when it comes to your health. Ensure that you have all you need when it comes to allergy medication as well as prescriptions before you go on. Online pharmacies like Oxford Online Pharmacy make it easy to order ahead of time and ensure that you are fully stocked before you head out. If you are going abroad, do check if there are any health warnings or vaccinations you need to take in advance.

Don’t forget the sunscreen

If there’s one point you shouldn’t forget it’s that the sun is a dangerous thing if you get too much of it. Those harmful rays can cause your skin to dry, show signs of ageing, burn, and can even be a risk of skin cancer. To that end, make sure that you’re protecting your family by using sunscreen every time you plan to spend some time outdoors, even if it isn’t particularly hot out. You want to choose sunscreen of around 60 SPF at minimum, and make sure that it protects against both UV-A and UV-B rays. Sunscreen should also be reapplied once every two hours, so don’t forget to keep that bottle on hand when you’re out and about.

Mind those allergies

Summer is hay fever season for a lot of people. The drier days also mean that dust and other allergens kick up and circulate more easily. Make sure that you’re stocked up on allergy meds, available through any local or online pharmacy. Improving the air flow in your home can help you stop allergens from resting in single rooms, helping you keep the air quality high, as well. People with asthma should make sure that their inhaler is on hand at all times, even if you don’t normally need it.

Get out and get active

With those long hot days, it can be easy to spend the day lazing around inside. However, summer also offers the best weather to get you and your family outdoors. Since the kids are out of school, they might spend a lot more time sitting around the home. However, a sedentary lifestyle is good for no one’s health. Aside from taking the opportunity to get out and go on walks and bike rides as a family, you can take the opportunity to make sure that you’re serving all the right food groups to your kids and crafting a healthy, nutritional diet for them, too.

Stay hydrated

It’s getting hotter and when the temperature rises, our body releases sweat to cool things back down. Sweat too much and your body starts to become dehydrated, which can lead to headaches, nausea, dizziness, and more serious symptoms if it’s not addressed. Try to keep cool, fresh water on hand at all times and make sure that you’re drinking plenty throughout the day. Men should drink roughly 3.7 litres a day, while women should try to get around 2.7 litres. Children don’t need as much, but you should make sure that water is always accessible for them.

Keeping healthy bedtime routines

We all know that we typically let the kids stay up a little later in the summer. The evenings are longer and hotter and we don’t want them fussing around uncomfortably in bed. However, children still need to sleep between eight and 13 hours each and every night, depending on their schedule. Maintain a bedtime routine for the whole family, including a thorough oral health hygiene routine. It’s been found that simply having a night-time routine can make it easier to fall asleep.

Summer need not be a time to fear, so long as you’re doing what you can to take care of your family’s health. Keep the tips above in mind and you should be able to enjoy the summer free from worries.

Collaboration.
