3 Hacks for Working from Home

If you’re new to working from home, you might be struggling to adjust to your living space becoming your workspace. Suddenly all the stresses of the office have followed you home, and it can be difficult to escape them.

Factor in the added distractions of kids, spouses, pets, neighbours, housework, social media, daytime television and a steady stream of messages from friends, family and co-workers, and it might feel impossible to get anything done.

Sound familiar? Take a look at three terrific quick fixes for some of the most common struggles of working from home.

1. Online Distractions

Okay, own up – we’re all subject to a little online distraction now and again. One minute, you promise yourself just a quick look. Next thing you know, you’re half an hour behind!

Or perhaps you find your undoing in online shopping pop-ups. If words like ‘Facebook’ or ‘Twitter’, or phrases like ‘Add to Cart’ represent a slippery slope away from productivity, you might benefit from Cold Turkey.

It’s a computer app that will block any websites you ask it to. Simply put together a list of your worst online enemies, set a timer on your new blocklist, and you’re good to go!

Just be certain before you hit ‘block’, as there’s no way to unblock those sites once the timer is set – even if you uninstall the software, you’ll have to wait until the timer runs out.

2. Food

When you started working from home, you might have had fantasies of taking breaks from your home office to painstakingly prepare lovingly home-cooked food for yourself and your family.

But if you’re struggling to find the time between one Zoom call and the next, that’s easier said than done.

Thankfully, there’s plenty of products one hand that are as nutritious and filling as they are quick to prepare. Riso Gallo have a great selection of simple but delicious options to keep you going throughout the working day.

3. Comfort

When you’re working from home, it’s difficult to strike the balance between comfortable and too comfortable. Anybody who is used to working from home will probably advise against working from your sofa if you can – especially if you’re likely to be tempted by the TV remote.

Obviously, if you already have a study space available, that’s perfect. Unfortunately, it’s not a luxury available to everyone, especially if you’re not the only one working from home.

Working from your kitchen or dining room table is a great solution, but it’s not always the most comfortable option. If you’re in it for the long haul, an office chair might be worth the money, but if you’re looking for a cheaper alternative, lumbar support attachments will do the job just fine. Compare a few options here.

These are just a few must-haves for remote working. Share yours in the comments below!

(If working from home does get too much and you can’t cope with the interruptions during conference calls, there are individual offices available around London that you can hire when you need to escape!)

Collaboration.

  1. Hi Ruth. I stay away from the bedroom because I am tempted to lie down and sleep. Thus, no work done for the day. I learned this the hard way (after not being able to submit my tasks for the day…which is totally irresponsible).
