How to Modernise Your Home & Garden on a Budget

Many homeowners want to find ways that they can modernise their home but worry what the costs might be. While it certainly can cost a lot to make modern upgrades to the home and garden, that is not to say that it cannot be done on a budget as there are lots of cost-effective improvements that you can make to revitalise the home.

Improve Curb Appeal

One of the best ways to improve your home is to focus on the front of the house. You can improve the curb appeal of your home without spending too much money with a fresh coat of paint on the front door, new door furniture, cleaning the windows and with flowers/plants out front. It’s also worth remembering to be clean and sparkly, not to let things drift a bit so that they look uncared for. The boring bread and butter if you will, like making sure the windows are shining and the gutters are in good order. Gutter cleaning is a pain though, so call in the experts to do it regularly. Gutter Cleaning Lexington is a good place to start so that you simply don’t have to think about it!

We had our door and windows painted with a Georgian green and put our bumblebee door knocker up instead of a bell. EVERYONE comments on the bee and I even hear people mention it as they walk past. Such a simple addition has made our door really eye catching!

Change Lighting

One of the best ways to modernise and update the home is to change the lighting as this has a huge impact on how a room both looks and feels. Try experimenting with the three layers of lighting (ambient, accent and task) to enhance a room’s visual appeal.

Paint the Walls

One of the best ways to transform the home and also one which is affordable is simply to paint the walls. This will make the space seem completely different but you must think carefully about the right colour schemes for the room and the interior design style that you have chosen. Another option is to create your own unique wall art or poster. Even better, add your favourite quote to the poster to give it your own personal touch. You don’t have to be a graphic designer to make one yourself! You just need an easy-to-use tool such as Canva to design the poster, and make sure to find free fonts to download. This way you don’t have to spend a lot of money.

Let’s just say I’m not afraid of paint! This mural is painted on one of Jimmy’s walls – my Mum and I did it by hand!

Paving Slabs

The garden is a space which can very quickly look tired, unkempt and uncared for (especially after winter). A highly effective and affordable way to improve this space is with paving slabs which can add visual appeal while also helping you to create a space where you can relax and socialise during the warmer months of the year. You can get great inspiration for paving ideas for your garden from specialists Marshalls which could provide help for you to transform this part of the home (and add value).

Having ANY garden was top priority after London living without one before we moved to Norfolk. I love how our garden room opens up our house to the outside so that in or out it’s all fluid!

Storage Solutions

Modern homes are all about space and cleanliness. Clutter is an issue which many homeowners struggle with and can even make it hard to relax in the home. This is why you need a storage unit and should try to find storage solutions that will help to keep your rooms neat, tidy and organised. This might include building shelves, having storage boxes that can be tucked out of sight and possibly throwing items out.

As you can see, you do not always have to spend a fortune to modernise your home and you can completely revitalise and transform the space with just a few easy and affordable upgrades.
