My First Circus: The Littlest Mermaid!

We have loved the ‘My First’ performances that we’ve seen in the past so when we were invited to see My First Circus: The Littlest Mermaid at The Garage for their press opening today we had to say a big fat yes please – even with the big kids in tow!

I wasn’t concerned that the age range is suggested for 2 – 6 because I knew that Raffie adored the show at Christmas while Florence would get stuck in no matter what and I wasn’t wrong. Unfortunately I did do the worst thing known to parenting and wake the baby up for the performance which wasn’t my wisest move. Crabby was an understatement yet still I think he enjoyed the sights and sounds as the actors told the story of the Littlest Mermaid.

Sitting around the edges of the performance space on cushions is how you watch these shows and as the children can join in, chat, call out and generally just be children this is the perfect place to introduce them to theatre. It’s friendly and as the actors make conversations with them pre performance I feel they are relaxed enough and familiar enough to be brave and bold during the performance. If all else fails they can take the chalks and draw on the walls – it’s totally allowed!

The story of the Littlest Mermaid begins with her searching for her prince but it ends perhaps not as you might expect… We know the familiar tale of magic and wishes for a soul but having to give up her life as a mermaid… Could she? Should she? Well, what we don’t know is that these days the mermaid is happy to just love herself and it’s a glorious story to take us there.

There were acrobatics, music and singing as well as dance and quite a bit of clever props and scenery. It really is a little slice of magic and the kids, of all ages, really enjoyed it!

When we lived in London we had lots of theatrical opportunity for children like this but in Norfolk it’s not so common place – this theatre company is a bit of a pioneer in our county so I just hope they do lots more! They have planned a Shakespeare for summer (sounds awesome) and then it will be back to panto so I’m hopeful they are planning to keep expanding. This is just what Norfolk needs with arts for our children and we blooming love it! It would be great if they would expand and do some workshops as I think my children would thoroughly enjoy them!

There’s fun inside and outside the theatre space at the My First Circus: The Littlest Mermaid on at The Garage in Norwich this Easter! Here’s Florence and Jimmy clowning around with Dilan who belongs to Dilan and Me!
