The Snowman – Sadlers Wells 2023!
As far as Christmas traditions go, making Raymond Brigg’s “The Snowman“, a Sadlers Wells production staged at The Peacock Theatre in London, one of yours is always going to be a good idea! It’s simply magical and no matter how many times we see it, we never tire. The magic of Raymond Briggs’s tale on stage set to a ballet theme is something truly special which leaves you feeling like you really are “walking in the air!”
My children have enjoyed the show as tiny ones, and as bigger children too and I think it really does offer families of all ages a little slice of Christmas cheer. From the fun and fabulous dancing fruits (always the highlight for me), to the evil Jack Frost trying dancing his way to devilry, the story is just as the book reads, leapt straight from the page into ballet shoes to entertain children year, after year.
Posie is really just at the age when she can appreciate the show properly for the first time and her wide eyes of wonder told me everything I need to know about how much she enjoyed the performance. At 1 hour and 50 minutes (including a 20 minute interval time) it is just the right length for fidgety little bottoms but it does also feel like you’re being able to fully take advantage of a proper London show. With ticket prices starting at £18 I think it’s tremendous value.
The show, now in its 26th year, proves its popularity with its longevity of course, but we also do want to give it a full thumbs up. The theatre staff assisting families to their seats is seamless and by the time you find yourself beaming at the end of the show, with snow falling on your head, you will be ready to book again for next year already!
The Snowman is perfection on stage for families looking for festive fun and if you time it right, leaving to come out and see all the Christmas lights of the wet end is a real treat. Then you can make like us and save some money by having tea at home rather than out in a restaurant.
