Tips for Travelling with Little Ones This Summer

Travelling with the kids can feel like a military operation, but with a bit of planning, it really can be enjoyable. Whether you’re heading abroad for a holiday or staying closer to home, a few small tweaks can make the journey smoother and help everyone start their break in a much better mood.
The key to a successful family trip this year is prioritising ease over an exhaustive itinerary.
Plan Smarter, Not Bigger
When planning your summer getaway, the destination sets the tone for the entire experience. While the allure of far-flung tropical islands is strong, short-haul flights to European destinations remain the gold standard for those wanting sunshine without the stress of a long-haul flight.
Destinations like the Algarve or Majorca offer child-friendly infrastructure and flight times often under three hours. Consider jetting off during the shoulder seasons if your schedule allows (late June or early September) to avoid the peak August heat and the densest tourist crowds.
Look for family-first accommodation setups: apartments with kitchenettes or hotels with dedicated splash zones often provide more flexibility than a standard room, allowing you to maintain some resemblance of your home routine.
Packing Without Overpacking
Excessive packing leads to airport stress and cramped car boots, so focus on the essentials: a generous supply of snacks and a change of clothes for both the child and the parent in your hand luggage. A few toys to keep them entertained during the journey are also a must-have.
Check your travel documents well in advance. British passports for children only last five years, and many countries now strictly enforce a rule that passports must have at least six months’ validity remaining. Don’t leave it until the week before, as passport processing times still fluctuate, so an early check is vital for peace of mind.
Getting There with Minimal Stress
The journey itself is often the most daunting part of the holiday. Organisation is your best friend, whether you’re travelling by car, coach, train, or plane. Book your seats together as soon as the window opens and pre-book airport parking or train transfers to avoid last-minute panics. Allow extra time for everything (from security checks to toilet breaks) so that you aren’t rushing.
Weather Ready and Safety Minded
Staying comfortable in the summer heat is essential for keeping spirits high. Sun protection is a non-negotiable, whether you’re on a Mediterranean beach or a sunny UK coastline. Aim to stay out of the direct sun from 11:00 to 15:00 when the UV rays are strongest, and invest in high-factor SPF 50 sun cream and wide-brimmed hats.
Hydration is also key. Little ones can become dehydrated much faster than adults, so keep water bottles topped up at all times. Remember, a slow holiday is often more successful, and if the temperature hits 30°C, don’t be afraid to swap the sightseeing for a quiet afternoon in the shade.
